BOOK LAUNCHES & BOOK REVIEWS:
A few reflections by Viga Boland, author
Last night was a big night for me: a book launch for the 6th book I didn’t want to write: “Don’t Write Your MEmoir without ME!”
For those who don’t understand that statement, watch this video: https://youtu.be/b6PzZCRta3s
I enjoyed myself as did the audience I believe. I can still hear their laughter when I told them that one person on Facebook had misinterpreted the title and left me this comment on a post: “Well I did write my memoir without YOU! So there!”
Well, excuse me LOL. But I do understand why she’d say that if she didn’t look carefully at the title, where it’s quite obvious I’m talking about putting ME into your MEmoir.
Wait! Maybe it’s not so obvious? Oh well, too late to change it now, especially since I’m delighted to say that last night saw me selling and signing 14 softcover copies of this book and I already have a growing waiting list for more. Wow! What author wouldn’t be thrilled with that kind of a response?
What’s more, sales of softcover books are going well at CreateSpace too. That, by the way, is the cheapest way for those of you who don’t live in Canada to buy the printed version of the book as shipping this to you from Canada is kind of expensive. Oh yes, you can also order it from Amazon, but do me a favour please: for softcover, printed versions, buy it from the CreateSpace link. You see, Amazon takes 30% commission on each sale. And that applies to KINDLE versions of the book too.
But here’s the thing: I’m self-published. I finance every book and it’s really nice when folks buy directly from my personal author’s site where you can get both the KINDLE and ePUB versions. That helps this old lady living on old age pension to buy food for hubby and me LOL. ‘Nuff said!
Now, moving right along, launching a book is exciting. But what comes next is the hard part: promotion. And harder yet? Getting BOOK REVIEWS! Man I hate that part for two reasons:
- It’s so darn hard to get buyers to post a review!
- What will they say? Nail-biting days ahead.
- Amazon won’t bother ranking you until you have at least 25 reviews! That means begging and begging. That’s worse than #1 and #2
Oh sure, I suppose I could pay sites to get me reviews, but I’ll go broke doing that. And Amazon doesn’t allow paid reviews on the site anyway. (If you’re a writer, did you know that?) My first book, “No Tears for my Father” took off like a rocket. I guess because the topic was so “hmmm, well…you know”, that curiosity brought in buyers. And since so many of the buyers applauded me for having the courage to talk about incest, they didn’t mind posting reviews when I begged. As I got through books 2, 3 , 4 and 5, I found I just couldn’t keep begging. So I stopped. And guess what? I don’t have even 10 reviews for #’s 2, 3, 4 and 5! Argghhh!
But now, there’s this latest baby I wasn’t expecting to write at the beginning of summer but did anyway. This time, I would really love reviews. Hopefully, you won’t hate the book or I might regret saying that. But if you do like it and think others should know about it, please leave me a review for both the paperback and Kindle versions on Amazon (they don’t carry over…go figure!) and on Amazon.ca. You can just copy/paste the same review. And if you’re up to it, leaving the same review on my personal website would be most appreciated.
There! I’ve done what I despise doing: I’ve just begged for reviews. Such is the self-published author’s life.
Oh, while I have you…if I haven’t lost you before now, don’t forget I’m inviting submissions from you all to “Let’s Talk Writing” at VIANVI.
Good idea to subscribe to the blog there too as that’s where I post my Book Reviews as well. There’s a new subscription link on the site now. Thanks to all who came out last night. That was awesome. Thanks for your support.
