Confessions on a work in progress is an enlightening editorial by Michael Gause, a member of our Memoirabilia Group at Facebook. Michael submitted this editorial to me when I posted a request for our WriterSpeak section of Memoirabilia, the online magazine, now with a podcasting division. Our WriterSpeak series will feature members of our Facebook group who have either already published a memoir or are in the process of writing one.
Michael K. Gause has taught German, sold men’s clothes, and stocked diapers at midnight. His writing can be found on the Web and in print. Originally from Tennessee, he now lives in Minnesota, where he laughs, loves, drinks, and writes, and is generally a happy Mensch. His sporadic blog can be found at http://thedayonfire.blogspot.com.
In regard to memoir writing, as Michael shares in the podcast, when he submitted his editorial to me, he hadn’t yet begun writing his memoir. Why not? Because
“Memoirs were for authors, real writers. Sure, I’d kept a journal since high school, even got some things published here and there, but a memoir? That’s huge. That’s an attic you can get lost in.”
What a superb metaphor for the process of writing memoir…an attic in which you can get lost. So true! But as Michael worked his way through both the personal aspects of memoir writing and the process, technique and issues involved in penning a memoir as opposed to other writing genres, it occurred to him it might be helpful to share how he was going about putting his memoir together.
So Michael says this podcast is “for those of you for whom the idea of writing their memoir still seems like that vast and scary attic.” I know you will enjoy listening to Michael as he shares a tiny bit of what prompted him to finally write a memoir and what he has discovered along the way. This is actually PART 1 of Michael’s editorial/podcast. We’ll share PART 2 in my next podcast, Memoirabilia #4. And I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that Michael would love to hear your comments and thoughts, not just on what he’s sharing here, but what you too have discovered about memoir writing. So please leave your comments below and share this podcast link with your fellow memoir writers.
