So you think you’d like to write your memoir! Tell the world about that secret you’ve get buried for way too long. Or, isn’t it time to fulfill that long time dream of writing a book, and what do you know best? Your own story of course! Your own life. Your family. Oh there’s some great stories in your family history. Maybe a few skeletons in the closet too. Oh wait a minute! Maybe you shouldn’t be telling anyone about that time Aunt Mabel insisted she’d never had sex but ended up pregnant.
Oh dear! The family might disown you if you told that story. Maybe you’d better hold off on that one. Maybe you should just stick to all those little stories your grandchildren just love listening too. Or maybe you could share some of those heart-warming or gut-wrenching stories about raising children, looking after an elderly parent, or … ?
Darn! Just what is it you want to write? Is it even a memoir? Maybe it’s an autobiography. What’s the difference between them anyway? Sigh… maybe you’re just not ready to do this at all. Maybe you should just go bake a cake or crochet a sweater instead. Perhaps writing isn’t for you after all.
Wait! You know what you’re doing, don’t you. You’re procrastinating. And you know where procrastination leads? It leads to paralysis. Before long you’ll abandon the whole idea of writing a memoir.
